December 12 1859

I received yr letter the

day we went to Hatfield

- & read it with great

distress - I postponed

replying until our return

in the hope, that I might

have seen somebody,

or heard something there,

wh:

wh: might have interested,

or amused, you.

But we have returned

to unspeakable sorrow =

to the bedside of my only

sister, our nearest &

dearest relative - who

is soon, most unexpectedly

& suddenly, to be lost to

us!

us.- She was a person

of great intellegence &

charm - one of those

persons, who are the

soul of a house & the

angelic spirit of a

family.

Therefore, I cannot

write now, but these

few

few lines, tho[ugh]' after what

you write of yourself, I

c[oul]d not be silent.

I am happy, that you have

been spared to those friends

who love you much -

none more than

Yours sincerely attached

D.
