Lionel Nathan de Rothschild

1808 - 1879

Born in London to Nathan Meyer and Hannah (daughter of Levi Barnet Cohen) Rothschild, Lionel lived with his wife, Charlotte, in their sumptuous house, Gunnersbury, at Acton in Middlesex. They also had a home in Buckinghamshire. He is the brother-in-law of Hannah Mayer, wife of Henry Fitzroy. Lionel was a banker and philanthropist. He succeeded to the chief management of the Rothschild banking house on England in 1836. In 1843, he worked with Moses Montefiore (father of Hannah Mayer) to help Russian and Polish Jews. He was elected for MP for the city of London in 1847, 1849, 1852, and 1857, but he did not take his seat until 1858 when the disability of Jew to sit in Parliament was removed. He resigned in 1874. He died in 1879 of an epileptic seizure.

Since their marriage, Benjamin and Mary Anne Disraeli were increasingly intimate with the Rothschilds of their generation (Lionel, Charlotte, Juliana, and Mayer). Lionel and Benjamin collaborated on the Suez Canal purchase of 1875.
